Open Auditions: BatBoy The Musical

The Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre August 5, 2026

Open Audition Announcement

WV Collective is excited to announce open auditions for Bat Boy: The Musical, the award-winning dark comedy about a half-boy, half-bat creature discovered in a cave near the fictional town of Hope Falls, West Virginia.

What begins as a bizarre tabloid-inspired comedy quickly becomes a surprisingly heartfelt, wildly theatrical story about family, fear, acceptance, identity, and what happens when a small town decides someone is simply too different to belong.

We are seeking a strong, fearless cast of singers, actors, movers, comedians, and character performers ready to embrace the show’s unique mix of rock musical, horror, satire, absurd comedy, and genuine emotion.

Concord Theatricals currently identifies the show as a full-length dark comedy with a cast of 4 women, 6 men, plus ensemble, though the show offers significant opportunities for doubling and creative casting.

⚠️ Content Advisory

Bat Boy: The Musical is intended for mature audiences and contains:

  • Adult themes and language
  • Violence and simulated blood
  • Sexual themes and innuendo
  • Religious satire
  • Discussions of death and animal violence
  • Disturbing family revelations
  • Stylized depictions of prejudice and mob violence

About The Music

Dark comedy / rock musical inspired by the legendary Weekly World News tabloid story.
Set in the fictional town of Hope Falls, West Virginia.
Follows a half-boy, half-bat creature who is discovered in a cave and taken into the home of local veterinarian Dr. Parker.
As Bat Boy learns to speak, dress, love, and live as a “normal” person, the surrounding community becomes increasingly suspicious and hostile.
Equal parts ridiculous, moving, grotesque, funny, and unexpectedly tragic.
Features a highly theatrical score ranging from rock and pop to gospel, musical comedy, and dramatic contemporary musical theatre.

A Note About Casting

WV Collective is committed to inclusive casting and welcomes performers of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, body types, and backgrounds.

Some characters have specific relationships or identities that are important to the story, but many ensemble and supporting roles may be cast creatively.

This is an ensemble-heavy show with extensive opportunities for doubling. Actors cast in supporting roles should expect to play multiple characters and may also portray townspeople, revival attendees, animals, and other unexpected roles throughout the production.

We strongly encourage actors with bold comedic instincts, strong physicality, and a willingness to make unusual theatrical choices.

The Cast

EDGAR / BAT BOY

Tenor — Lead

A strange half-human, half-bat creature discovered living in a cave. Edgar begins the show feral and frightened but rapidly learns language, etiquette, and human behavior. Intelligent, sensitive, intensely emotional, and desperate to belong.

This is an extremely demanding role requiring:

Excellent contemporary musical theatre vocals
Strong acting ability
Significant physical characterization
Comedy and dramatic depth
Comfort with stylized movement and physical performance

Edgar is the emotional and physical center of the entire show.

MEREDITH PARKER

Mezzo-Soprano — Lead

Dr. Parker’s wife and Shelley’s mother. Compassionate, nurturing, intelligent, and immediately protective of Edgar.

Meredith becomes deeply invested in transforming Bat Boy into a civilized young man, but beneath her warmth lies a complicated history and long-held secrets.

Requires a strong singer and actor capable of balancing maternal warmth, comedy, emotional intensity, and dramatic revelation.

DR. THOMAS PARKER

Baritone — Lead

The local veterinarian and Meredith’s husband.

Initially reluctant to allow Edgar into his home, Dr. Parker becomes increasingly jealous, resentful, and unstable as the story progresses.

A complex role requiring an actor who can move convincingly between dry comedy, insecurity, anger, menace, and tragedy.

SHELLEY PARKER

Mezzo / Belt — Lead

The teenage daughter of Meredith and Dr. Parker.

Initially horrified and resentful of Edgar, Shelley’s feelings toward him change dramatically as she begins to recognize his intelligence and humanity.

Funny, emotionally direct, rebellious, and passionate.

Requires strong contemporary musical theatre vocals, excellent comic timing, and significant dramatic range.

REVEREND BILLY HIGHTOWER

Featured Character Role

A charismatic revival preacher who leads the community in a highly theatrical religious gathering.

Big personality. Big energy. Big opportunity for comedy.

Requires a fearless performer with excellent stage presence and strong vocal ability.

SHERIFF REYNOLDS

Featured Supporting Role

The local sheriff who becomes responsible for figuring out what exactly should be done with the strange creature discovered in the cave.

A strong character role with opportunities for grounded comedy.

RICK TAYLOR

Featured Supporting Role

One of the young people connected to Bat Boy’s discovery.

Aggressive, jealous, insecure, and increasingly hostile toward Edgar.

A strong character role requiring confident comic and dramatic instincts.

RON TAYLOR

Featured Supporting Role

A member of the Taylor family and part of the group involved in Bat Boy’s discovery.

Often part of the production’s extensive doubling structure.

RUTHIE TAYLOR

Featured Supporting Role

Another member of the Taylor family involved in the discovery of Bat Boy.

A featured role with opportunities for broad physical and character comedy.

DR. TAYLOR

Featured Supporting Role

A member of the Taylor family and a character who becomes involved in the increasingly strange events surrounding Edgar.

May be doubled with additional roles depending on the production.

The Crew

We’re also looking to fill several behind the stage roles, so NON-ACTOR/SINGERS, don’t feel left out lol.
